Word Study is a different way to approach spelling instruction. The Word Study approach does not include memorization, instead it encourages children to examine and manipulate words. The following are activities that you can do at home with your child:
- Play word games (exp: Scrabble or Hangman)
- Help your child practice synonyms and antonyms. Say a word to your child and have them tell you a word with the same meaning or the opposite meaning.
- Show your child pictures in a magazine and have your child tell you the beginning and ending sounds.
- Have your child cut out pictures from a magazine and have your child sort the pictures into categories. It would be best if your child created the categories on their own, after examining the pictures. The parent can also help the child create the categories, if necessary. Sorting is a great way to help children make sense of words.
- Say a letter to your child and have them tell you a food that starts with that same letter or ends with the same letter.
- Help your child do a word hunt, using their favorite books (exp: help them look for words that have them same sound or pattern). Have them write the words down in a notebook.
- Help your child pick out words from their books and have them color the consonant and vowels in different colors. (exp: consonants – green, vowels – yellow).
