- Read informational text to your child or have your child read informational text to you.
- Make different types of literature available in your home (exp: books, magazines, cook books, biographies, poetry, fables, fairy tales, chapter books). In addition, provide books that interest the child. If the child likes sports, provide books related to sports. If the child likes ballet, provide books that are about ballet.
- Many children enjoy audio books. Have your child use audio books to follow along with the text.
- Discuss with your child how some movies are based on a book. Choose a book and read it together. Then watch the movie together. Discuss both and have your child compare and contrast the book and movie.
- Visit the public library together (frequently).
- Provide activities at home that require reading and writing (exp: Have your child help write the grocery list before a trip to the supermarket. Help your child write a menu for lunch and dinner at your home).
